The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially announced Professor Mohamed Janabi of Tanzania as the newly elected Regional Director for the WHO African Region (AFRO) in a special meeting of the WHO African Regional Committee today (18th May 2025) in Geneva.
Professor Janabi, a highly respected cardiologist and public health leader, succeeds the late Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, also from Tanzania, who was elected in 2024 but sadly passed away before taking office. His election marks a continuation of Tanzania’s significant contribution to global health leadership within the WHO framework.
As Regional Director, Professor Janabi will oversee WHO’s work across 47 African countries, guiding strategies to strengthen health systems, respond to health emergencies, and improve health outcomes across the continent. He will serve a five-year term, with the possibility of one reappointment.
His appointment comes at a crucial time as the region continues to recover from the impact of COVID-19 and scale up efforts toward achieving universal health coverage and health equity.
