MPOX: A RENEWED GLOBAL HEALTH EMERGENCY

We are Zenith Global Health as part of our commitment  to ensure health equity and wellbeing among the population globally, we have put together a brief overview of Mpox to keep you informed and updated about this newly declared Public Health Emergency.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has been a significant public health concern, particularly in Africa, where it has been endemic for years. In 2024, there has been a notable rise in cases, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a new variant, Clade I (Clade Ib), has emerged.

This variant has spread to neighboring countries like Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, causing a surge in cases and deaths, particularly among children under 15 years old.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency in August 2024 due to the rapid spread of this new variant and the potential for further international transmission.

The WHO and Africa CDC are now emphasizing the need for increased surveillance, vaccine distribution, and global cooperation to combat this threat.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has also urged countries in the Americas to strengthen their surveillance systems, despite no cases of this new variant being reported in the region yet. Global efforts are ongoing to contain the spread and prevent further outbreaks.
