5 Nollywood Stars Join The Oscars Academy.Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, has gained global recognition and is now the second largest film sector worldwide, valued at $6.4 billion. The Oscars Academy has recently invited four talented individuals from Nollywood to become members, acknowledging their innovative contributions to the industry. These newly inducted members, including Jade Osiberu, Richard Mofe Damijo,Shola Dada,CJ Obasi, and Kunle Afolayan, have made significant impacts and played crucial roles in the growth and success of Nollywood.

This recognition by the prestigious Oscars Academy is a testament to Nollywood’s increasing global prominence, solidifying its position on the international stage. Notable box office hits like “The Wedding Party” and “Battle on Buka Street” have propelled Nollywood’s success, bringing it closer to dominating the global film landscape.

Jadesola Osiberu, an emerging filmmaker and director, has made a distinct mark in the industry. Known for her successful movies like “Brotherhood,” “Sugar Rush,” and the captivating crime thriller “Gangs of Lagos,” Jadesola embodies creativity and innovation.

Her attention to detail in casting and the outstanding cinematography in her films exemplify her commitment to excellence. Earlier, it was reported by Nairametrics that Jade, along with her production company Greoh Studios, secured an exclusive three-year agreement with Prime Video to create and produce TV shows and movies.

The collaboration resulted in “Gangs of Lagos,” the first African Nollywood content produced under this partnership. Last year, the film achieved an impressive N328,881,000 at the Nigerian box office, remaining in theaters for 14 weeks.

Richard Mofe Damijo, a highly paid and versatile actor, continues to be a prominent figure in the industry at the age of 61. His appearance in the Netflix series “King of Boys 2” reaffirmed his status as one of the industry’s finest, following his impressive performances in productions such as “Shanty Town” and “Castle on Castle.”

CJ Obasi, a Nigerian filmmaker, has rapidly gained influence with movies like “Ojuju” and “Mami Wata.” His zero-budget film “Ojuju” won the Best Nigerian Film award at the Africa International Film Festival in 2014, while “Mami Wata” received a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shola Dada, renowned for her contributions to Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ and Bolanle Austen-Peters’ ‘Man of God,’ was also extended an invitation based on her exceptional work on these films. Her remarkable talent and achievements were recognized when she won the Best Writer for Drama/Comedy award at the 2023 AMVCA, solidifying her position as one of the top talents in Nollywood.

Kunle Afolayan, the CEO of Golden Effects Pictures, is widely recognized as one of the industry’s most notable filmmakers. His film “Anikulapo” achieved tremendous success in 2022, becoming the most-watched non-English movie on Netflix with over 8.7 million global views. Afolayan’s previous film, “October 1,” also achieved significant success, grossing over N100 million since its premiere. “Anikulapo” recently received multiple accolades at the African Magic Awards, winning in four categories.

The Oscars Academy has previously invited other Nollywood stars, including Funke Akindele, known for her movie “Battle on Buka Street,” which became the highest-grossing film. Akindele was also recognized for her award-winning film “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” and comedy series “Jenifa.” Daniel K. Daniel, Newton Aduaka, and Blessing Egbe were also honored in the acting and directing categories respectively. In 2021, Ramsey Nouah Jr., Mo Abudu, and US-based director Andrew Dosummu joined the esteemed ranks of the Oscars Academy.

The 96th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This marks the third consecutive year that the ceremony will be held in March. The submission deadline for general categories is set for November 18, 2023, with preliminary voting for the shortlists beginning on December 18 and the official nominations announced on January 23, 2024, following the nominations voting period from January 11 to 16.
